THE YEAR OF BOOKS |
BOOK TO MOVIE |
![]() QUARTER 1 | The Outsiders | S.E. Hinton
We will be reading this book at the beginning of the year. Many of my previous students have loved this novel and have asked to read other books written by this author. This book is basically a coming-of-age novel by S. E. Hinton, first published in 1967. Hinton was 15 when she started writing the novel, but did most of the work when she was sixteen and a junior in high school. Hinton was 18 when the book was published. The book follows two rival groups, the Greasers and the Socs (pronounced by the author as short for "Socials"), who are divided by their socioeconomic status - yet united by more than they realize. |

![]() QUARTER 2 | The Giver | Lois Lowry
We will be reading this book at the beginning of our second quarter. This novel take a deep look into the world we live in by looking at a society that is nothing at all what it seems. The Giver, a dystopian children's novel by Lois Lowry, is set in a society which is at first presented as a utopian society and gradually appears more and more dystopian. The novel follows a boy named Jonas through the twelfth year of his life. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "Sameness," a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. |
